The Verge: Sam Altman apologizes for ‘messy’ GPT-6 Astra rollout that’s locked out paying users
Just hours after OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra, CEO Sam Altman was already apologizing for what he describes as a “messy rollout” after paying users expecting access to the new frontier model were left waiting.
The company hailed the model as a “generational leap in capability” on Thursday and described it as the start of “the AGI era,” a fuzzy and poorly defined term tech executives nevertheless insist on using to promote their products.

As far as OpenAI is concerned, the company has in fact used an explicit definition of AGI—including in its agreement with Microsoft—and I think that, especially from now on, it should be held accountable for whether the models and systems it develops meet that definition.
The definition set out in that agreement (here: https://media.mts-in.com/PX-207.pdf) is:
“AGI” or “Artificial General Intelligence” means a highly autonomous system that outperforms humans at most economically valuable work.
The agreement also specifies at length what the definition excludes.
